Patent and Trademark Application Statistics - First Half of 2020 in Taiwan

In the first half of 2020, 33,954 patent applications were filed in Taiwan, which number represents a slight 4% decrease in the number of patent applications filed compared with applications in 2019.  A total of 43,385 applications were filed to register trademarks, which number set a new record for trademark applications.  Increased numbers of domestic applications remains for both invention patents and trademark applications.

The number of domestic invention applications filed by enterprises in Taiwan grew by 1%, which accounted for more than 75% of the total number of domestic inventions.  Among these, the number of applications filed by SMEs grew by 14%, continuing a trend of 10% growth for two consecutive years.
The total number of invention patent applications filed by universities increased by 19% over the same period last year, and the total number of invention patent applications submitted by research institutions slightly increased by 2% over the same period last year.
For foreign applications, Japan filed the largest number of invention applications (6,105 applications) in the period.  Japan also accounted for the largest number of design patents (497 applications).
  1. Trademark applications in the first half of 2020
In the first half of this current year, 43,385 trademark applications were accepted by TIPO, which is a 3% increase over applications filed in 2019.  Of these applications, 10,542 were filed by foreign applicants, and 32,843 were filed by domestic applicants, and the total sch number sets a new record for the most applications filed since 1989.  The proportion of domestic applications to the total number of applications rose from 71% to 76%.
With domestic applications, the largest number of applications identified services in class 35 (advertising and business management) (5,955 applications), while the highest increase rate (24%) was for applications with identying goods in class 5 (pharmaceuticals).  China was the source of most of the foreign applications (2,289 applications), and most of the foreign applications identified goods in class 9 (computers and technology products).
