The Requirement for Mandatory Installation of Rooftop Solar panels Passed by the Legislative Yuan
In order to effectively utilize the roofs of buildings to promote solar power generation, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has referenced the legislative experience of Berlin, Germany and, in June last year, proposed to amend the Renewable Energy Development Act specifying that newly constructed, expanded, or altered buildings shall be equipped with solar power generation equipment. The amendment has been approved by the Legislative Yuan. MOEA and the Ministry of Interior (MOI) will jointly promulgate relevant sub-laws and regulations to cover the details, including the scope of buildings applicable to the regulation, the required installation capacity, and exemptions, etc.
This amendment also encompassed new provisions related to offshore wind power, hydropower, and geothermal energy sources.
The Minister of MOEA stated that the amendment is in line with the policy of maximizing the development of renewable energy and corresponds to the public's expectations for energy transformation.
