Foreigners may now take the Medical Technician Certification Test
On January 5, 2007, The Legislative Yuan revised the Medical Radiation Technologist Act, the Medical Technologist Act, and the Occupational Therapist Act. The laws now allow foreign nationals and overseas Chinese to test in Taiwan for certification as a medical radiation technologist, a medical technologist, or a occupational therapist. Those who receive licenses and the competent authorities’ permission will be allowed to practice. The competent authority of the central government will later establish methods of permission and management.
The Legislative Yuan also revised the requirement for continuing training at set periods for personnel who pass the examination for the above listed technologists. Further, practitioners will only have to renew their licenses every six years.
This relaxation of the law follows the revision of the Physicians Act in January 2002 that allowed foreigners and overseas Chinese to test for licenses to practice in Taiwan. According to Paragraph 2, Article 2 of the Enforcement Rules of Professionals and Technologists Examination Act as promulgated on May 24, 2005, foreigners may take tests for medical professionals in Taiwan, including medical doctors, Chinese medicine practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, registered professional nurses, registered professional midwives, clinical psychologists, counseling psychologists, respiratory therapists, registered nurses, registered midwives, and medical lab technicians.
