The Ministry of Education Now Permits Taiwan Universities to Recruit Students from China
Students from China will be allowed to study in Taiwan universities as early as the fall semester of 2010 according to the plans of the Ministry of Education. In the initial stage, 2,000 students will be allowed to attend undergraduate and graduate schools in Taiwan; however, schools will be required to maintain the number of registered students from China at a number that is less than 2 percent of the total student Enrollment. Moreover, public universities will only be able to accept students from China for master programs, while no similar restriction is imposed upon private schools.
The Ministry of Education and some universities expect that recruiting students from China will have a positive effect on education in Taiwan and will increase the number of students attending most of the institutes of technology or other professional colleges.
However, recognizing academic credits from China also raises a concern as to whether it will have a major impact on education. Some people worry that students coming to Taiwan from China will not only increase competition in Taiwan but also result in a reduction of starting salaries for students after graduation. Some therefore are urging the Ministry of Education to carefully consider its proposed measures.
