Overdue Penalty for Traffic Fines Reduced

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) recently completed the review of traffic regulations under the MOTC jurisdiction to substantially decrease the penalty imposed on overdue traffic fines. In the future, except for serious traffic violations which will remain under severe penalty, overdue traffic fines imposed for other traffic violations will be subject to an overdue penalty of a maximum of 50% of the amount fined, a substantial decrease from the current overdue penalty of 100% of the fine. The new regulations will come into force in January 2010. In the new regulations, the overdue penalty imposed will depend on the maximum fines imposable by law for the underlying violation as well as the period the fines in question remain outstanding.
