ZERO TARIFFS ON LCD MONITORS

Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan recently amended the tariff schedule to lower the tariffs on LCD Monitors. According to the new tariff schedule, both computer LCD monitors and non-computer LCD monitors (such as LCD TVs) will enjoy a zero tariff rate. The market expects that the imported LCD providers will lower their product price and therefore increase competition with domestic LCD monitor providers.

With the new tariff schedule, the Legislative Yuan also hopes to provide more incentive for other countries, such as those from the EU, whose current tariff rate on LCD products with screens larger than 19 inches is 13%, to grant a zero-tariff treatment to Taiwanese LCD monitors. However, some critics say that due to different market size between Taiwan and its trade partners, it appears excessively optimistic to expect that other countries will waive their tariffs on Taiwanese LCD monitors reciprocally just because of the Taiwanese new tariff schedule.

The new tariff schedule is also regarded as a preparation for further FTA negotiation with other Taiwan trade partners.
