Service Charges to be Capped at NT$ 200 for Reporting Lost Electro

In response to the recent complaints regarding unreasonably high service charges imposed by the issuers of electronic cash cards, the Financial Supervisory Committee of Executive Yuan (FSC) announced on 22 June 2010 that an amendment to the current Mandatory and Prohibitory Provisions of Standard Contracts in Electronic Monetary Cards is underway and once published, issuers will be prohibited from charging service fees higher than the amount designated in the amendment.

Under the current amendment draft, service charges for reporting a stolen electronic cash card will be capped at NT$ 200. Service charges for redemption may not exceed the greater of NT$ 200 or the sum of the residual value remaining in the card plus the deposit. The amendment also puts an NT$ 50 ceiling on service charges for providing transaction records of the previous year and a NT$ 100 ceiling for transaction records prior to the previous year.

Along with the reform of service charges on electronic cash cards, the FSC is reportedly considering an amendment of the Mandatory and Prohibitory Provisions of Standard Contracts in Credit Cards as well, which would lower the service charges for reporting a stolen credit card from the current NT$ 1,000 to NT$ 200.
