New Fund Could be Created to Resolve Consumer Disputes Related to the Purchase of Financial Instruments
Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission is drafting a bill to protect consumer rights in connection with disputes resulting from the purchase of financial instruments. The bill will not be applicable to professional investment institutions, individuals with certain fortunes or professional abilities, legal entities or foundations. The Commission plans to establish a dispute resolution institution that will be funded by the relevant financial service providers and has indicated that they will try to avoid adding extra burdens on the providers. The draft is being prepared and is scheduled to be reviewed by the Executive Yuan by the end of the year (2010). There is another version of the draft prepared by Legislator Cheng-Yuan Tsai (蔡正元) and the different drafts are expected to be hotly debated by the legislators.
