Investment Protection Pact to be Signed between Taiwan and Japan

Taiwan’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Shih Yen-Shiang, confirmed that Taiwan and Japan will sign an arrangement for the Liberalization, Promotion and Protection of Investments.

The Pact will be signed between Taiwan's East Asian Relations Commission and the Japan Interchange Association and will be an extensive accord covering three main areas: the promotion of bilateral investment activities, the protection of investment activities in the event of disputes, and the liberalization of more investment sectors. Taiwanese investors will enjoy national treatment in Japan, and Japanese investors will enjoy national treatment in Taiwan.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Pact will attract more small- and medium-sized Japanese companies to invest in Taiwan. Serendipitously, Japan has been seeking a backup overseas production base since the major earthquake that struck Japan earlier in 2011, and Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs decided that Taiwan can cooperate with Japanese companies in this regard, and in doing so, enhance the amicable relationship between Taiwan and Japan.
