Drivers Prohibited from Watching Television

In recent years, more and more drivers in Taiwan have installed small television screens on the dashboards of their vehicles, so that they can watch programs or DVDs while driving. This situation constitutes an obvious safety risk and the Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MOTC) has proposed an amendment to the “Road Traffic Safety Rules” on December 13, 2011. The new rules forbid drivers from watching television while driving.

The new rules stipulate that a violation will constitute evidence of the driver’s culpability in car accidents, according to MOTC. Moreover, in 2013, it is expected that new technology installed in all cars will automatically turn the screens off when cars are moving. If this technology is not utilized in a vehicle, the car will not pass inspection, according to the MOTC.
