Taiwan Relaxes Requirements for Foreign White-collar Workers

Taiwan’s Council of Labor Affairs has decided to relax the requirements regarding salary and work experience for foreign white-collared workers. Foreign students may stay in Taiwan to work in specialized and technical occupations even if they do not have two years of work experience, provided that their monthly salaries are at least NT$ 37,616.

Some people have sarcastically referred to this policy as the “Jeremy Lin clause”. Nevertheless, the Council of Labor Affairs has recently clarified that the policy will not apply to occupations such as athletes and entertainers.

The Council of Labor Affairs further stated that the purpose of the new policy is to entice elite foreign nationals who have received an education in Taiwan to stay and work in Taiwan. Relaxation of the relevant requirements is hoped to increase the likelihood that some of these foreign nationals will stay in Taiwan.

The Government has stated that those foreign white-collar workers who do not meet the current requirements can still come to Taiwan through special consulting procedures.
