Practitioners of Manipulation and Deep Massage Forbidden from Working in Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospitals

Taiwan’s Department of Health has decided to prohibit practitioners of manipulation and massage from working in Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospitals (TCMH). The manipulation and massage services provided by many TCMH will no longer be permitted.

Many of these practitioners are strongly opposed to the new policy and are complaining that their ability to earn a living will be greatly influenced.

Government officials state that the manipulators and massagers may establish companies and register commercially. This will be an alternative means for them to carry on their practices. However, there must be a clear divide between practitioners of manipulation and massage on the one hand and therapists on the other. If manipulation and massage practitioners fail to maintain this distinction, and claim or otherwise advertise that their services are therapeutic in nature, they will be fined.
