Amendment to Advance Gender Equality and Protect the Right to Work
On December 3, 2013, Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior announced a proposed regulatory amendment to Article 8 of the Regulations on the Establishment and Management of Stationed Police of Various Institutions, Schools, and Organizations. The proposed amendment removes certain current qualifications for stationed police.
Under the current provisions, a qualified stationed police must have completed military service if he/she has neither taken police education/professional training nor undergone military training and held a rank of no lower than sergeant. Also, he/she must be under the age of 50. Male stationed police must be of a height not less than 165cm and weigh no less than 50kg, and females must be at least 160 cm tall and weigh no less than 46kgs.
The Ministry of the Interior indicated in the announcement that the amendment aims to achieve protection of gender equality and the right to work under the Constitution, as well as to comply with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
The amendment will take effect on January 1, 2014.
