Actions Proposed to Deal with Adulterated Foods

Taiwan’s various relevant governmental departments have proposed taking certain actions in order to deal with the problem of recently-discovered adulterated edible oils. The proposed actions are as follows:

1. Ministry of Health and Welfare Three measures are proposed: the edible oil industry will be required to (1) join the source-tracking system, (2) enhance self-management and (3) undergo board inspection (邊境查核) of foods conducted jointly by relevant governmental departments.

2. Environmental Protection Administration: the handling of waste edible oils will be regulated.

3. Council of Agriculture: oil manufacturers of animal foods will be regulated.

In addition to the above, the Ministry of Health and Welfare will examine and discuss with the Ministry of Justice the length of sentences for the crimes of manufacturing, selling, or offering food that is harmful to health. The Ministries will consider increasing the amount of criminal penalties as well as a proposed amendment of the Administrative Penalty Act (i.e., canceling the Double Jeopardy Principle).
