Government Requested Almost 70,000 Personal Data From Internet Service Providers In 2 years
The 2018 Taiwan Internet Transparency Report indicated that, according to the investigation, the government requested almost 70,000 personal data from the internet service providers such as Chunghwa Telecom (中華電信), Far EasTone Telecommunications Co (遠傳電信), Taiwan Mobile Co (台灣大哥大) and other providers in 2015 and 2016.
Law enforcement agencies made about 95 percent of the requests, and their main reasons were to investigate criminal crimes. “The purpose of personal data requests is to help criminal crimes investigation, but not to invade privacy”, said Criminal Investigation Bureau official.
Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Yu Mei-nu (尤美女) said, while General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) takes effects in next month, since there is no authority for personal data and privacy protection in Taiwan, it is important that each government agency should report and analyze how they collect and use personal data.
