Exams for Judges, Prosecutors, Lawyers, and Legal Affairs Civil Servants to be Integrated

Taiwan's Executive Yuan (行政院), on January 6, 2022, has passed the "draft Act Governing the Qualifications and Appointments of Legal Professionals" (法律專業人員資格及任用條例草案) (Act) prepared by the Examination Yuan (考試院), which Act integrates the examinations of judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and civil servants in charge of legal affairs. 
 
Per the draft, all candidates will first take one exam to qualify for training.  After passing the exam, qualified candidates will undergo one-year of training.  Then, the candidates who successfully complete the training, can, based on their exam scores and preferences, apply to formal selection for positions as either judges, prosecutors, lawyers, or civil servants in charge of legal affairs.  Finally, the candidates who are selected for formal selection can obtain the qualification(s) of either judges, prosecutors, lawyers, or civil servants in charge of legal affairs.
 
Premier Su, Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌), Dean of the Executive Yuan, stated that this new examination policy was one of several judicial reform policies of President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), and will allow Taiwan to reach the following goals: unification of the training of legal professionals, enrichment of democracy and strengthening of the rule of law, enhancement of the quality and efficiency of the judiciary, promotion of the civil servant professions, and further protection of the people's rights and interests.
