TAIWAN MOVES TO PRIVATIZE TELEVISION MEDIA

Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan recently passed a new bill for the Statute Regarding the Disposition of Government Shareholdings in the Terrestrial Television Industry that will regulate the release of government holdings in terrestrial TV stations in a move that will push the current administration’s goal to divorce Taiwan’s media from political, partisan and military influences.

According to the Statute, a committee of seventeen members must be formed twenty days after the law takes effect. Taiwan’s vice premier will convene the committee, while four members will represent the government, one will represent the terrestrial TV union and the remaining eleven members will be suggested by Taiwan’s various political parties in proportion to the seats each holds in the Legislative Yuan.

Under the new law, when the government decides to privatize a particular terrestrial TV station and rearrange it as a public corporation, the government will be required to set aside a budget for the purchase of public holdings in the station.
