TAIWAN RELAXES RESTRICTIONS ON FOREIGN BANK BRANCHES PROVISION OF ACCOUNT-OPENING DATA IN COMPLIANCE WITH WTO COMMITMENTS

In compliance with Taiwan’s WTO commitments, Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission recently relaxed restrictions on the provision of information on the opening of savings accounts in the headquarters banks of foreign-bank branches in Taiwan. Now, in the event that the headquarters bank has no business unit, it may provide information regarding the opening of an account at a branch in the country where it is located. If, however, no branch in that country engages in business, the headquarters bank may, if the Financial Supervisory Commission approves the same, provide information on the opening of an account at a designated branch in another country.
