Taiwan Law Offices permitted to take on Foreign Interns

  Following the Aug. 4, 2006 announcement of the Financial Supervisory Commission allowing foreign students at junior college level and above to take up internships in Taiwan CPA offices, the Ministry of Justice announced on Sept. 21, 2006 the Guidelines for Foreign Nationals Serving as interns in Republic of China Law Offices. This new policy will not only facilitating personnel development and recruitment for local enterprises and law offices, but will also help promote international academic exchange.

  Under the new guidelines, foreigners can apply to ROC consulates and other representative offices abroad for their visas.  The internship period in Taiwan law offices will be limited to six months.  In cases of necessity, however, the mentor lawyer of the law office concerned can apply to the Ministry of Justice for a one-time extension of six months. Any change of the law office’s foreign intern’s mentor lawyer during the period of internship should be reported to the Ministry of Justice. Further, an intern shall not use the title of “intern” for the purposes of engaging in the practice of law or performing other work that has not been approved.
