Shopping vouchers to be issued by Jan. 18 or 19, 2009

The Taiwan government plans to begin issuing consumption vouchers valued at NT$3,600 (US$108) to each citizen on Jan. 18 or 19. By doing it a week before the Chinese New Year holiday, he continued, the vouchers would probably not be completely distributed before the holiday began, but it would give those who really need the vouchers time to pick them up, while others could wait until after the holiday. The voucher plan is part of the government's efforts to stimulate consumer spending to help revitalize the domestic economy. The plan is projected to boost 2009 gross domestic product growth by 0.64 percentage point if all the vouchers are used.

Lawmakers passed a bill on 5 December 2008 for the government to give consumption vouchers worth NT$3,600 to each of the nation’s citizens in an attempt to help stimulate business activities. People can get their vouchers starting at 8 a.m. Jan. 18 at locations designated by their local household registration offices.

Under the passed bill, those who are not in urgent need of the purchasing subsidy may get their vouchers after the holiday until April 30. The vouchers will be valid for use until Sept. 30, 2009, and retailers or companies must claim reimbursement for the vouchers by Oct. 31, 2009. Those born by the end of March 2009 with household registrations as citizens of the Republic of China will be eligible for the program, according to one of a set of resolutions attached to the bill.
