New Smoking-ban measures effective from 11 January 2009
According to the newly adopted amendment to Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act which is effective from next year, smoking is prohibited in the following parameters:
Workplace: Offices having more than 3 or more employees, government agencies, state-owned enterprises, financial institutes, post office, telecommunication companies, etc; (2) Food: Restaurants (including coffee shops, fast food restaurants, etc.); (3)Clothing: Market places; (4) Transportation: All public transportation vehicles and its waiting areas; (5) Education: All schools up to and including high school, libraries, laboratories, concert halls, auditoriums, exhibitions, conference halls, museums, art galleries, cultural or social education institutions, and places that provide children and young programs; (6) Entertainment: Auditoriums, cinemas, audio-visual businesses, computer entertainment businesses or other leisure entertainment locations open to general public.
Smoking indoor is prohibited, except designated as smoking room in following places: Hotel, market places, restaurants, senior facilities, etc. Smoking outdoor is prohibited, except with designated smoking are in: Universities and colleges, libraries, museums, art galleries, gymnasiums, swimming pools, senior facilities.
If “No Smoking” signs are nor displayed clearly at the entrance or smoking related equipments are provided, the person in charge of the place might be imposed a fine of NTD 10,000 to 50,000. Smokers will be fined NTD 2,000 to 10,000 for smoking in a “No Smoking” area.
