Fines Increased for Violations of the Labor Standard Act

The penalties for violation of the Labor Standard Act have not changed since 1984 when the Act was first promulgated. The Council of Labor Affairs (CLA) is currently planning to impose fines in amounts three to five times higher than the current fines for violation of the Act. At the same time, however, CLA is also planning to abolish criminal penalties for certain violations of the Act while imposing heavier fines.

Moreover, CLA has proposed that the names of companies and their responsible persons in violation of the Act be published. The name list will also be announced on the CLA website.

CLA expects that the amended Labor Standard Act will be implemented this year.
