Pregnant Workers Eligible for Pregnancy Leave

According to the Regulations for Workers’ Leave, when a physician determines that a pregnant worker’s pregnancy is at risk, said worker is allowed to apply for pregnancy leave for out-patient treatment. The pregnancy leave shall include hospitalized sick leave, and the worker will be entitled to take the hospitalized sick leave for a period of up to one year every two years. In the event that the sick leave does not exceed thirty days in one year, the worker is even entitled to receive fifty percent of her salary for those leaves.

If an employer refuses to grant pregnancy leave in such cases, the employer will face a fine of up to NT$ 100,000.

The Council of Labor Affairs hopes that the pregnancy leave will provide a friendlier working environment to pregnant women so as to increase the birth rate in Taiwan.
