Group Litigation re Adulterated Edible Oils
Taiwan’s Consumer Protection Committee initiated litigation against four companies that manufacture oils, including Ding-Hsin (頂新), Cheng-Yi (正義), Chang-Kuan (強冠) and Pei-Hai (北海), for and on behalf of 20,000 consumers (Consumers). The total compensation requested by the Consumers is approximately NTD 3,700,000,000 (approximately USD 123,333,333). To this date, the number of plaintiffs and the claimed amount are the highest on record in a group litigation case.
The compensation amount is calculated based on NTD 180,000 (approximately USD 6,000) / person in accordance with Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation, Consumer Protection Act, and other relevant laws. For details of the claimed amount (NTD 3,700,000,000), it is said that NTD 1,900,000,000 is claimed against Ding-Hsin (頂新), NTD 900,000,000 against Cheng-Yi (正義), NTD 700,000,000 against Chang-Kuan (強冠), and NTD 100,000,000 against Pei-Hai (北海).
