Changes and Proposals to the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation
The series of food safety crises last year has been frightening for both customers as well as manufactures due to the pervasive nature of the problems. Even the famous and well-respected food manufacture, I-Mei, detected in its own food safety laboratory food sanitation and safety problems and took preventive measures.
With its success in detecting food safety problems, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration recently stated that the so-called “I-Mei Clause” will be implemented soon. Food manufactures listed on the TWSE (Taiwan Securities Exchange), TPEX (Taipei Exchange), or any other manufacturer of a certain scale as announced by the authorities will be required to establish their own food safety laboratories to examine the ingredients and any other products of their own to ensure the quality and safety of their food products.
In news with respect to the Food Safety law, the labeling requirements for Genetically-Modified foods will be amended to require manufacturers to clearly label bulk product packaging to indicate whether a product is genetically-modified. However, due to the cost considerations, many famous restaurants use genetically-modified beans for some Hong Kong dim sum and other delicacies. Some NGOs urge that these restaurants be subject to the labeling requirements for genetically-modified foods, so that customers can know whether the food or delicacy they order is genetically-modified or contains genetically-modified ingredients.
