TAICHUNG HARBOR FREE PORT EXPECTED TO BE READY FOR BUSINESS BY THE END OF 2005
On 13 January 2005 Taiwan’s Free Port Coordinating Committee under the Executive Yuan has approved the establishment of the Taichung Harbor Free Port. After the project gains Executive Yuan approval, Taichung Harbor will become the third free port in Taiwan. The other two are Keelung Harbor and Kaohsiung Harbor.
According to the Taichung Harbor Bureau data, this port will encompass an area of 536 hectares and will have the largest land area of the three free ports in Taiwan. The initial-phase of development should be completed in October of 2005 if no obstacles are encountered, and the new free port is scheduled to begin operations by year-end.
The Taichung Harbor Free Port will handle container and bulk cargo businesses, and will seek to develop a storage and distribution center for chemical and oil products. The Port will coordinate efforts with both processing and manufacturing industries, and promote the facilitation of production, logistics, and processing operations in the region.
