Taiwan and Japan Sign Investment Protection Accord
After more than a year of negotiations, Taiwan and Japan on 23 September 2011 signed an Investment Protection Accord, signaling a break-through in economic cooperation that could lead to the signing of a free-trade agreement between Japan and Taiwan in the future.
The Accord consists of three parts, namely the “Investment Promotion”, “Investment Protection” and “Investment Liberalization,” each of which are expected to take effect by the end of 2011, pending the necessary legislative approval.
It is expected that the signed Accord will encourage more small and medium-sized Japanese companies to invest in Taiwan and thus further deepen end enhance future collaborations between Japanese and Taiwanese business ventures.
